Since May 1986 IMMSP (as the Special Bureau of Mathematical Machines and Systems of the Institute of Cybernetics) has been responsible for the development and improvement of the National Decision Support and Predicting System on Radioactive Contamination of Surface Water in Ukraine after the Chernobyl Accident. The results of the mathematical modelling were used for the decision making to decrease the radionuclide release from the water bodies in the Chernobyl zone and from the Kiev Reservoir as also for the prediction of radionuclide concentrations in Dnieper river, crossed whole Ukrainian territory, These results were practically used by the Ministry on Chernobyl Problems, Ministry of Water Management, Ministry of Environmental Protection and Ministry of Public Health. The Working Group has been organized by the Academy of Sciences from the specialists in computational hydraulics, computational fluid mechanics, hydrology, environmental radioactivity from the different Kiev's institution to work out with the IMMSP staff in this field. On the base of this Working Group the Department of Mathematical Modelling of Water Systems was established in the IMMSP at April 1987, headed by Dr. Mark Zheleznyak.
Since January 1996 the work is continued in the Branch on Environmental System Analyses (BESA) which includes two departments
Department of Environmental Modelling, headed by Dr. Zheleznyak , and
Department of Marine&River Systems Modelling, headed by Dr. Vladimir Maderich.

The BESA staff includes 26 researchers, engineers and programmers

Main Areas of the R&D Activities
  • Development of the software systems for the decision support on off-site nuclear emergency management, water management and water protection.
  • Modelling of radionuclides and chemical pollutants (oil, heavy metals, etc) transport in the rivers, reservoirs and coastal areas (box model, 1-D, 2-D, 3-D models) and on the watersheds.
  • Modelling of radionuclides and chemical pollutants transport in groundwater.
  • Modelling of dispersion of the toxic heavy gases in the atmosphere.
    Computational methods of water management
  • Modelling of waves, currents and suspended sediment transport in reservoirs and coastal areas of the seas
  • Modelling of unsteady water dynamics and sediment transport in the network of river channels.
  • Development of the software systems which include computational modules, graphical user interfaces, GIS, Data Base Systems ( including real-time systems), Internet interfaces.
  • Long term case study: modelling assessment of radionuclide migration in surface water and groundwater of the Chernobyl zone, analyses of the efficiency of countermeasures to prevent radionuclide transport from the Shelter and surrounding territories More about projects
The Ph D students are preparing their Ph D (Candidate of Sciences) dissertations in BESA
